B Acronyms

B2B   Business to Business.

BASIC   Beginners All-Purpose Symbolic Instruction Code.  BASIC is a programming language first developed in the 1970's. Early PC's used BASIC programs to function, and BASIC was the foundation for DOS and Windows.

BBS   Bulletin Board System.  BBS's were the forerunner to the Internet, giving users the ability to post and retrieve messages (early e-mail), chat online, and download/upload files (now done via ftp).

BCC   Blind Carbon Copy.  An email-related term which allows you to send an email to multiple recipients while not showing each recipients email address in the TO: field. This is the preferred method for forwarding emails to others.

BIOS   Basis Input/Output System.  A collection of input/output routines set in ROM.  The BIOS is the connection between the hardware in a computer and the operating system that runs on it.   Adapter cards also often have a BIOS.

BIT   Binary Digit.

BNC   British Naval Connector.  This is a coaxial cable connector used in networking applications.  Most NIC's use either a BNC or Ethernet connector to connect to the network. BNC has many other acronyms; Barrel Nut Connector, Bayonet "N" Connector, Barrel Network Connector, Bayonnette-Neill-Concelman, and Baby "N" Connector. See also AUI.

bps  Bits Per Second.  This is a measure of data transfer speed. 8 bits = 1 byte.
