FAT File Allocation Table (FAT16 or FAT32)
FAX Facsimile. This is a term describing the electronic transmission of printed documents over a phone line between two FAX machines. Today's modems have FAX capabilities built-in.
FCBS File Control Block Sets
FCC Federal Communications Commission. The US government agency responsible for regulating the frequencies used for and the content transmitted via broadcasts.
FC-PGA Flip Chip-Plastic Grid Array Intel's new 370-pin CPU design. It features a different electrical requirement than S370 (Celeron), but is physically compatible; Socket 370 motherboards are not necessarily compatible with new FC-PGA chips, but new FC-PGA motherboards can usually handle original Socket 370 processors. FDISK Fixed Disk utility This program, part of MS-DOS, enables PC manufacturers and technicians to assign portions of the disk for usage (a.k.a. disk partitioning). FDISK allows you to divide a hard drive into multiple drives of equal or varying sizes. After FDISK, a format is required for the OS to use the drive space.
FIFO First In First Out An area of memory (buffer) that holds information in the order in which it was received until the computer has time to use it.
FLOP Floating Point OPeration This describes an single manipulation of a floating point number in a microprocessor. One measure of the speed of a microprocessor is how many FLOPs can be accomplished in a second.
FORTRAN Formula Translator. A specialized programming language.
FPS Frames Per Second. A unit of measure for video speed. This denotes how many frames per second the display adapter and monitor are capable of processing.
FPU Floating Point Unit. The portion of the computer's CPU responsible for calculations - the speed of the FPU denotes the speed of the CPU. FPU's are measured in MIPS.
FTP File Transfer Protocol. A method of data transfer with or without a GUI. A FTP program can be used to connect to FTP servers, on a WAN or the Internet, for the purpose of transferring files only.
