GB Gigabyte. This unit of measure consists of one billion bytes, or 1000 megabytes. A byte is approximately equal to one ASCII character, or one letter or numeral.
GDI Graphics Device Interface.
GHz Gigahertz. As described above, the prefix "giga-" equals one billion; therefore, gigahertz = 1000 megahertz (MHz). This is a measure of operating frequency.
GIF Graphics Interchange Format. This is a picture format, made popular in the early 80's by CompuServe.
GIS Geographic Information System.
GMT Greenwich Mean Time.
GPS Global Positioning System (or Satellite). A series of satellites first launched by the US Government for mapping, defense and research. With GPS devices, a user can pinpoint his or her position on the globe within a few meters. It relies on multiple satellite signals for accuracy - more satellites means more accuracy.
GPF General Protection Fault. A memory error on Windows-OS PC's. This is usually caused by a memory conflict - an experienced technician can usually decipher the error code and correct the conflict.
GPU Graphical Processing Unit A new video technology which brings some of the video calculations formerly performed by the CPU onto the video chipset, dramatically improving and increasing display resolutions, refresh rates and frames per second.
GUI Graphical User Interface (pronounced goo-ee) . Windows is an example of a GUI, whereas DOS is not a GUI. A GUI is an interface for the user to access and use data in a friendly manner, as Windows exhibits. OS/2, MacOS, X-Windows and Linux Red Hat are also GUI's.
