R Acronyms

RAID Redundant Array of Inexpensive (or Independent) Disks. This is a technology implemented in servers. It consists of multiple internal disk drives containing copies of the same data. If one disk fails, the data is not lost.

RAM Random Access Memory. This component of your PC is commonly referred to as Memory. It is made in many configurations, the most common of which (today) is PC100 or PC133 compliant, 168-pin slot architecture.

RAMDAC Random Access Memory Digital to Analog Converter.

RAS Remote Access Service.

RASAPI Remote Access Service Application Programming Interface.

RDRAM RAMBUS DRAM. A new RAM technology developed by Intel Corp. promising much higher performance than PC100 or PC133 SDRAM.

REM Remark (or Remote). A programming command to insert a statement in the code of a program instructing the program to ignore the following statement.

REN Rename. A DOS command used to rename a file.

RF Radio Frequency.

RFFE Radio Frequency Front End. A communications component of a digital cellular tower facility.

RFB Request for Bid(s). RFB's are issued by developers, builders and government entities for the purpose of obtaining cost estimates for service, construction, products, etc.

RFC Request for Comments. See RFB.

RFP Request for Proposals. See RFB.

RGB Red Green Blue. A method of color distinction - all colors can be made with different saturations of Red, Green and Blue. Monitors use Red, Green and Blue light guns to illuminate different colors ona screen. RGB is used as a printing and imaging term also.

RISC Reduced Instruction Set Computing. A RISC processor is considerably faster than a standard PC CPU. Processors use instruction sets to perform calculations - RISC processors include fewer instructions, but perform those tasks considerably faster.

RMA Return Material (or Manufacturer) Authorization. RMA's are issued by manufacturers and distributors to replace defective items and control inventory. Many manufacturers require a RMA be obtained prior to shipping for warranty fulfillment.

ROM Read-Only Memory. A CD is an example of a ROM. Read Only means the information cannot be overwritten or erased.

RPG Role Playing Game.

rpm revolutions per minute.

RS Recommended Standard. As in RS-232.

RSAC Recreational Software Advisory Council. The RSAC places warnings on software to protect youths and others sensitive to violence in certain games.

RTF Rich Text Format.
