UART Universal Asynchronous Receiver / Transmitter.

UCS User Coordinate System (a.k.a. Universal Character Set, a.k.a. Unicode Conversion Support). A User Coordinate System is used in CAD applications to allow the designer to manipulate the x/y/z coordinate system.

UDBC Universal DataBase Connectivity.

UDMA Ultra Direct Memory Access. This term is commonly used to measure IDE device transfer rates (eg. UDMA33 indicates 33mb/sec data transfer rate). See also ATA33/66.

UHF Ultra High Frequency.

UIC User Identification Code.

UL Underwriter's Laboratories.

UMB Upper Memory Block.

UML Unified Modeling Language.

UNIVAC UNIVersal Automatic Computer.

UNIX UNiversal Interactive eXecutive. This programming laguage is commonly used for database management, mail servers, etc. Linux is a offshoot of UNIX.

UPC Universal Product Code. UPC codes are bar codes that contain information that, when scanned by a bar code reader, provides pre-programmed data from a server to the bar code reading device. Scanners at checkouts read the UPC code A server then sends price and product information to the register.

UPS Uninterruptable Power Supply OR United Parcel Service.

URL Uniform Resource Locator. An address which specifically locates information on the Internet. HTTP and FTP sites are examples of URL's. Microsoft's URL is "http://www.microsoft.com".

USB Universal Serial Bus. This is an interface for peripheral devices to connect to a PC, or to a hub. USB devices can include (but are not limited to) printers, scanners, modems, digital cameras, etc.

USPS United States Postal Service.

USR US Robotics (company). USR, famous for its modems, has been acquired by 3Com Corp.

UV Ultra Violet.
