After installing America Online Version 5 on a computer that had Version 4, my Internet Explorer doesn't work!

Installing AOL V5 in a separate directory than AOL V4 corrupts Windows system files used for Internet Explorer - files shared between Windows and the AOL browser.

This is not a fix, but a workaround.

Make sure to save any downloaded files from your C:\AOL\Downloads folder to a separate folder (C:\My Documents. for example). Remove all instances of AOL software. From the Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs. Remove all AOL software installed. Then manually delete all of the menu items, folders, etc. Restart the PC.

Reinstall Windows over the top of itself. A FDISK and format are not required. This will repair the damaged files.

After reinstalling Windows, run Windows Update (if Win98) and/or apply patches as necessary (Win95/98/NT). Then reinstall AOL Version 5. DO NOT REINSTALL VERSION 4 AND VERSION 5, we recommend only installing V5 or later.

A less drastic solution is probably available, but the amount of work required doesn't justify the time spent.
